We were founded in 2013 and started out as a breast cancer survivors group. The initial idea for forming came from the Solas Cancer Support Centre and with a lot of help and advice from Dr. Constantino Castinera, Consultant Breast Surgeon, who has his own crew ‘CRC Suir Dragon Paddlers’ in Clonmel. Founding committee members commenced paddling in Clonmel in July ’13 and were hooked. We received great support from family and friends. Some of us travelled to a nearby town to learn to paddle until we got our own boat in 2014. We found it addictive and decided to open membership to everyone over the age of 18. Why not share the fun?
Breast cancer survivors take priority as this type of exercise is very beneficial to our recovery. We train 2-3 times a week but we are now off the water for the winter. The river we train on is tidal so we can't go at any set time. At the moment we have 36 members ( 33 ladies and 3 gentlemen ). We have also taken part in a few regattas. Unfortunately last December our founder lost her battle with breast cancer. She was a great inspiration to a lot of us and a wonder lady.
